FAQs
-
Do I need to be Irish? No. We welcome and encourage all peoples to join us! Admittedly, most people that are attracted to Ceili have Irish heritage, but we want to celebrate and promote this style of dancing. Anyone who is willing to come and learn is appreciating the culture.
-
How are gender roles treated?Ceili dancing is under going a transition of our language from "gents and ladies" dancing roles to "leads and follows" roles. With that being said, we often have more people that want to be follows than leads. You will often find more experienced members dancing both roles to allow more people to dance (and to increase their understanding of the dance).
-
Am I too old / out of shape? No. If you can walk you can dance. There are modified moves for the dances that are, basically, "walking with rhythm." We alsoa schedule an easy dance followed by a hard dance, then an easy one again, which will allow breaks in between for resting. A large number of our members are above 70, so it is never too late to learn something new! Ceili is scientifically shown to help keep up endurance. A study by Shanahan et al. has shown that adding Ceili dancing to an early Parkinson's disease care routine may help improve quality of life.
